What is the difference between a duvet and a comforter?

A comforter is a fiber filled quilt that is placed over the top of the top bed sheet to warm a person while they sleep.  A comforter is similar to a blanket.  Normally a top sheet is used between a comforter and a sleeping human so as not to have to wash the comforter on a regular basis.  Comforters are typically hard to wash and expensive to wash due to the bulkiness of their stuffing which is sewed into place inside the comforter. These insulative stuffing materials are traditionally down or feathers, wool, cotton, fur, silk, polyester, or other man-made synthetics.

Duvets are similar to a comforter (and sometimes referred to as a comforter) as they are fiber filled quilts however, duvets are placed inside a duvet cover.  A duvet cover is a protective sheet (formed like a large pocket) to house the duvet inside of it.  Duvet covers can be removed and washed on a regular basis.  Europeans typically do not use top sheets with duvet covers although, 60% of Americans still prefer to use a top sheet. In the past, duvet covers were hard to get a duvet inside of it’s duvet cover.*  The growing trend towards not using a top sheet in the USA (from 30% not using a top sheet in 2017 to 40% in 2018) is partially due to manufacturer, DeBora Rachelle, who has designed a luxury duvet cover that is EASY to get on and off of a duvet.**  The DeBora Rachelle patent pending Zip-Zip-Flip duvet cover makes for an easy way to get the duvet cover into the comforter by unzipping the two sides of the duvet cover, inserting the duvet, fastening the duvet into place, then zipping back up the two sides and flipping the top portion over the cover to hold the duvet inside.  It’s as easy as 1 - 2 - 3 or Zip-Zip-Flip!  Click here to watch the video.

Whereas comforters remain the same weight at all times, duvets can be changed from winter weights (for a warmer insulation) to summer weights (contains less filling) depending on the season or weather.

Duvets were originally designed using down (bird feathers) inside as the insulator.  Cruelty-free groups like PETA and other animal friendly groups have come together to show how birds and animals are tortured during the process of ripping out their feathers.  The public has acknowledged this abuse and are showing their support by purchasing down alternative duvets. Down alternative duvets have shown to be just as good if not better than original down duvets.  For example, DeBora Rachelle duvets use cotton in it’s natural state which allow for breathability (keeping you cool when you need it and warm when you don’t).  Many allergens are found in the use of down feathers.  Whereas DeBora Rachelle Zip-Zip-Flip duvets are hypoallergenic and cruelty-free.

Both Duvets and comforters are compatible with typical bed sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, split king, and cal-king. Comforter and duvet sizes run slightly larger than mattress sizes to allow for draping over the sides of the bed.

Advantages of duvets over comforters:

  1. Duvet covers protect the duvet and make it easy to keep clean but just washing the duvet cover and not the duvet itself.  Washed comforters are bulky, tend clog washing machines and after washing tend to bunch up the fill inside.
  2. Duvet covers are less expensive to wash than comforters.
  3. Duvets can easily change the look and feel of your room simply be adding a new duvet cover.
  4. Duvets can be of winter or a lighter summer weight without having to invest in a new duvet cover for each season.  Likewise, if you are a hot sleeper (hot body heat), you can simply choose a lighter duvet for the inside of your duvet cover.
  5. With DeBora Rachelle Zip-Zip-Flip easy to wash duvet covers, there is no reason to use a top sheet.  As the duvet cover can be taken off easily, washed and zipped back on undeniably fast.
